The use of the dry system for exterior façades is widely used by architects and designers to shape the shapes of buildings with lightweight materials that do not significantly overload the buildings.

The new generation of materials used are capable of withstanding all weather conditions: rain, sun, wind, erosion.

Outdoor plasterboard is characterised by greater resistance to weathering, water and moisture. It is used for all exterior applications as it allows for more functional and long-lasting results. Plasterboard sheets suitable for outdoor use are divided into two macro categories: plasterboard with fibreglass reinforcement and fibre cement panels.

Fibreglass-reinforced plasterboard

In general, the most commonly used plasterboards for exterior use are those with glass fibre reinforcement. In this case, the board is composed of a gypsum layer, a cardboard layer, a second additive layer of gypsum and an external fibreglass coating. This treatment makes the panel more resistant to moisture, weathering and possible impacts and abrasions. In fact, even when exposed to atmospheric agents, plasterboard panels for exteriors are not deformed, do not absorb moisture and are not subject to the formation of mould.

This type of plasterboard is used for:

  • For creating walls, counter walls and ceilings in areas where high humidity is present;
  • To create ventilated walls;
  • To create fire-resistant coatings;
  • As protection of photovoltaic systems;
  • As a coating for architectural elements exposed to the elements;
  • As support for the building's thermal insulation system.

Fibre cement panels for exteriors

Outdoor plasterboards with glass fibre reinforcement are not the only possible solution: there are also fibre-reinforced, insulating, easily adaptable and water-resistant lightweight concrete boards on the market. With one of the two sides covered with a layer of glass fleece, the panel withstands the weather, does not warp, does not lose consistency and does not degrade.

When installing, for the side covered with veil glass (smooth side), only the grouting of the joints or direct painting on the surface of the panel is envisaged (when the panel is applied outdoors, the smooth side faces inwards). The rough side, on the other hand, is directly applied with adhesive or direct skimming: when installed outdoors, it should face outwards.

 Outdoor fibre cement panels are used for:

  • For creating counter walls, partitions and false ceilings in both wet and dry environments;
  • for energy efficiency upgrading;
  • can be applied on wooden or steel structures.
